The Machine (2013) Review by Paul Frankl from United Kingdom
I thought this film was beautiful - the use of special effects werestunning and were utilised in a clever way that added to the atmosphererather than overshadowing the plot.

The Machine is an interesting, dark sci-fi that focuses on characterand mood rather than flashy guns and action scenes. I heard itdescribed as a kind of prequel to Bladerunner, and agree this could betrue. It has a good script with unexpected plot turns and no excessivedialogue. The delicacy it deals with with issues of loss and mourningwas great.

It is a new take on the classic Frankenstein story, is beautifullyshot, and was an entertaining film to Streaming at Tribeca this year.

The Machine (2013) Review by smashingbaby from United States

Just saw this movie at a London screening this weekend, and itdelivered on many levels. The 3 Critic Reviews posted (by DreadCentral, Sound on Sight, and The House Next Door) have done a very goodjob of describing the movie, plot, positives (many), and shortcomings(few), which I won't repeat because they are spot on.

This is a smart movie, thought provoking, and has numerous twists andturns that take you in different directions than you anticipate. Solidacting and performances by all, excellent casting, appropriatemotivations & emotions for all characters (not clichéd, but nuanced, and sometimes guarded, sometimes unchecked & raw, as situationallyappropriate when one is working and being monitored in ultra secret MoDenvironments on a high tech war footing, when lives are at stake, andgovernment paranoia is omni-present), especially Vincent and theMachine, and the damaged soldiers being experimented upon. Vincent is aworld weary brilliant scientist who is using the MoD to save hisdaughter & to carve out some semblance of a "normal" family lifeagainst an uncertain and dangerous global Cold War, and has to walk adangerous tightrope. This is one of Toby Stephens best performances ofhis career, and he is completely believable as the torturedprotagonist.

The film looked great, excellent special effects, makeup, stunts, verymoody & stylistic sets, lighting, & cinematography, and it was editedas a tightly paced story that didn't lag or drag. No bloodbath, andwhat violence there is in the movie is appropriate for the plot lineand not gratuitous, which was refreshing. You care about the charactersand are fully vested in how the story develops, surprises, unfolds, andleaves you pondering profound questions about the evolution of hybridhuman/A.I. in potentially positive directions. Surprisingly, the filmdoes not end on the expected dark note, but leaves you intrigued andeagerly anticipating a sequel to further explore these questions.

A timely thought provoking movie, with themes to current day worldaffairs, and humanity, that is accessible to all audiences, whether youare a Sci-Fi fan or not. Something for everyone, and ticks all theright boxes for an excellent movie. You'll get your money's worth.

The Machine (2013) Review by chris_mcsweeney from United Kingdom
The Machine follows the story of two irritating scientists as theystand slackjawed at the edge of one of the greatest scientificdiscoveries of all time. That's about all I can say without giving awayany spoilers, and in all honesty that's already a more accurate plotsynopsis than the one that already exists on the IMDb.

This movie had some genuinely impressive moments, which are the resultof some very competent film-making; the visual effects are beyondanything I could've possibly imagined and are nothing short ofspectacular given the film's low budget. Aside from this, thecinematography is very impressive - however it segues from beingbeautifully shot to appallingly shot so frequently it will leave youboth dizzy and confused.

The set design was also impressive, and more accurate than you mightassume - a Q+A with the Director revealed that care had been taken tomake the sets look authentically MoD. As well as this, thetechno-babble isn't as stupid as it initially sounds either - the crewhave indeed done their homework.

However, I'm sorry to say it was all for nothing, as the three criticalelements that keep people interested - the script, acting and casting -are nothing short of appalling. The characters are incredibly flat -often spewing robotic exposition, and they occasionally have outrightbizarre sweary outbursts in a desperate bid to make the dialogue seemmore brooding.

The film's leading actress is sublimely annoying, and her shrill, squeaky voice made me want to knaw off a thumb before the hour mark. Asfor Tobey Stephens, after 10 years of following they guy's career, Istill can't tell if he's a bad actor, or if he's consistently fed awfulscripts. Either way, in this film he often acted as though he'd justwitnessed some horrible event and had been given a powerful sedative.

The fundamental flaw with this film is that some very talented peopleworked very hard to put together a visually stunning piece of work -although seemingly no one had read the script. It was awfully clear, right from the opening scenes that it'd been written in one draft, possibly over a weekend. This was incredibly frustrating to witness, because there's no reason that independent, low-budget films - whendone right - can't become world-wide blockbusters (i.e. ParanormalActivity). However, once its film festival run is all said and done,Red&Black Films will see this movie fade away into obscurity; and theywill say it's because they didn't really have the resources, or theydidn't have bigger names attached, but they will be wrong. It's becausethe whole idea was flawed right out of the gate; and the basic elementsthat were at their own fingertips right from the get-go (dialogue, characters, pacing) were so catastrophically out of whack it sunk afilm that really could've been something special. Shame.
