The Employer (2013) Review by Hunter Johnson from United States

Finding a job these days is tough, especially one that actually paysthe bills. The search could even be described as a "true horror story"for some; even if you do land an interview, often you can get beat outby a more qualified candidate. Frank Merle, the writer and director ofthe new horror thriller, "The Employer," takes this idea to a whole newlevel: in this interview, you either get the job or die…

It's a now classic set-up. Five strangers wake up in a locked room. Before long, they realize they have something in common: they have allrecently interviewed for a position at the mysterious CarchariasCorporation, and today is supposed to be their final interview.Unbeknownst to them, The Employer (Malcolm McDowell) has a verysinister way of choosing the perfect candidate for the job. You see, atCarcharias Corporation, having a well-rounded resume is only half thebattle. What's the other half? It's killing the competition before theykill you first. Last one standing gets the job of their dreams…

The great part about a film like "The Employer" is that it takes afamiliar premise and gives it its own unique and rather intelligentspin. Yes, pitting people against each other in a locked room hascreated some pretty grisly horror films, but "The Employer" isn't aboutthe gore; it's about the characters. Merle creates a group of veryfleshed out young professionals who have every reason in the world totry to get ahead. It's more fun to get to know the characters firstbefore they're brutally murdered as opposed to Streaminging strangers gethacked up; it makes for a much more satisfying viewing experience.

But while Merle crafts characters who are undoubtedly justified intheir reasons to despise each other, he also brings out strongperformances by five very talented actors. The scenarios he sets up forthese interviewees are amplified by their terrific performances.Everyone brings something to the table, and everyone has a secret.

James, played by David Dastmalchian, is our Everyman and is wonderfullynaïve and hopeful that in this terrifying scenario maybe, just maybe, nobody has to die. It really feels like at any moment Dastmalchiancould break out and become a recognizable face for frequent moviegoers, and a film like "The Employer" certainly allows him to show some greatrange. Opposite him is the beautiful Paige Howard who plays the kindand caring Sandra. It's hard not to root for these two; their chemistryis strong, especially when the going gets tough.

Juxtaposed against this optimistic, seemingly level-headed pair are ourother three captives: the sexy and ass-kicking Billie (KaterinaMikailenko), the bruising and massive Mike (Matthew Willig) and theloudmouth Kieth (Michael DeLorenzo). Five very different people in onenightmarish interview, "The Employer" creates a tense and unnervingexperience that gets to be a real free for all with plenty of twists tokeep you guessing who's going to get the job.

Which brings us to our last and most important piece of this puzzle:The Employer himself, Malcolm McDowell. As the puppet master of thiswhole scheme, it's extremely fun to see The Employer get inside of theheads of these characters and find out exactly what makes them tick. It's always fun to see McDowell play a bad guy, but in "The Employer"he's even more dementedly charming than usual. Every time McDowell ison the screen he steals the show, which is understandable given hisultra-talent. He embodies the mission of the Carcharias Corporation andadds a level of mystery and intrigue that we can only hope for a sequel(or two) to expand upon.

And maybe that's the real reason this movie was so enjoyable: the factthat it asks more questions than it answers. While Merle's intentionsfor making this film are unknown, "The Employer" raises a lot ofquestions not only about its own reality but also our own, andfrequently plays with moral questions that we deal with on a dailybasis. How often do we see people doing anything to get ahead of thecompetition, or a massive corporation treating its employees like pawnsin its own sinister game? Merle has created a film that is modern, violent and full of nasty twists, "The Employer" grabs you and won'tlet you go.

Lastly I'll leave you with this, the same thing that Merle told mebefore I Streaminged the movie and the thing that probably intrigued me themost: at the end, only one person walks out of that room alive…

The Employer (2013) Review by robopanch-557-647895 from United States
"Nobody Dies" That is what James Harris (David Dasmalchain) tells thegroup of 4 other applicants when he discovers that in order to win ajob at the mysterious "Cacharais Corperation" they must murder eachother until only one remains. It is a high minded ideal, but will itwin out against the cold realities of their circumstances? These arethe brutal circumstances put forth by "The Employer." Will they try tomake it out together? or will their own fragile natures ensure theirdemise? Through flashback we see each of the characters interview withthe mysterious Employer (Malcolm MacDowell)here we see their strengths, but more importantly their weaknesses. In addition to James theeveryman there is the seemingly sweet and naive Sandra (Paige Howard),the stylish grad student Billie (Katerina Mikalilenko) the fast talkinghuckster Keith (Michael Delorenzo) and the gentle giant Mike (MatthewWillig) who has ample brains in addition to his brawn. After Jamesdeclaration tensions arise and insecurity about survival starts to gnawaway at them. Add in a cameo from Billy Zane and you have a greatthriller that utilizes character development and suspense, not cheaptawdry gore. "The Employer" adept commentary on our insecurityregarding today's job market shows that director Frank Merle is a boldnew voice in not only the realm of horror, bit all of cinema. Iwholeheartedly recommend it!

The Employer (2013) Review by betterexecution from United States
Starting from the top down: Malcolm McDowell. If you're making athriller or a sci-fi movie (maybe even a sci-fi thriller) and you canafford it, it's never a bad idea to have Malcolm McDowell as a memberof your cast. This is particularly true when the movie calls for themost sociopathic Human Relations director the corporate world has everseen.

Five strangers wake up in a room with no means of escape. Initiallydistrustful of each other, as they calm down and begin to speak withone another they all realize that they are each up for a job at theCarcharias Corporation, a mysterious organization which buys othercompanies, strips them down and sells them for profit. Before thisrealization even has time to settle in, the group hears a phone ringingfrom a nearby air vent. Upon retrieving and answering it the voice onthe other end, revealed to be The Employer (McDowell), asks to be puton speakerphone before revealing their eventual fates.

Trying to call the authorities will be useless. The group is limited tofive outgoing calls so they must use them wisely. Most importantly, this is their final interview for the position. Each of the five peopleis direct competition to the other four. The only means of eliminatingthe competition is (hopefully you've figured it out by now) by killingthem. While all of this is being explained to the group the viewer cansee The Employer casually meandering about his luxurious estate. Thisis why Malcolm McDowell was so perfect for this role – as the realityof imminent death is setting in on each of the five members, TheEmployer has a very laid back and easygoing nature. Lastly, as eachperson dies, a call will come in with a code that they will need inorder to open the door and exit the room.

Despite the fact that at this point the group of five has already begunto distrust each other, they decide to make a pact to go against theircaptor and not kill each other. They further this sentiment bycollecting items that they could use in a violent fashion (belts,high-heeled shoes, etc) and storing them in the air vent.

As they begin discussing the ramifications of their current predicamentthe viewer begins to learn more about them and their highly differingbackgrounds. This is done in an interesting manner. First, we see agroup of five individuals who are scared for their lives. Second, wesee clips of them in their individual interviews with The Employer. Itis an interesting contrast to see the faces that they put on in theirquest for corporate glory as opposed to their real, primal selves astheir situation slowly deteriorates. It's only a matter of time beforeself-preservation kicks in and the job is quickly forgotten as eachperson fights to stay alive.

While it may sound like a rehash of movies of a similar nature (Cube,Unknown (2006), the Saw series, etc), The Employer really isn't assimilar as it seems. The common denominator linking the group is whatthey all thought was a highly sought after job. That's it. It's not dueto their lifestyle choices. They don't have special talents that shouldhelp each other survive. They aren't suffering from amnesia. They arejust five people who happened to be unfortunate enough to apply for aposition at a company with really rough hiring practices. Additionally, their deaths aren't due to elaborately planned out contraptions whichgive them some kind of horrible decision between dying or being maimed.Their survival is dependent primarily on their ability to kill. That'swhy The Employer shouldn't be put on the same shelf as similar titles. It does a fine job standing out on its own.
