Back in the day giant monster movies were all the rage thanks to KingKong and Godzilla. Now they seem to only pop up from time to andusually in low budget films that don't offer all that much. The latestSpiders, is the latest creature feature to crawling onto DVD and VOD,but will it be enough to make your skin crawl or be just anothergeneric SyFy channel style cheese fest.

Spiders follow a city under siege from a new species of poisonousspiders as they mutate into gigantic proportions after crashing toEarth on a destroyed Soviet space station. If the plot soundsridiculous, it is, but that is usually the case in these sorts offilms. If you can't separate yourself for the silly nature of things tocome then you shouldn't be investing your time into this film. Thatbeing sad, Spiders is a lot of fun. Believe it or not, it doesn't comeoff like a cheesy SyFy channel as you would expect. It shows that thisfilm either had a decent budget or was just used wisely to make it workas opposed to just slapping something together. The story is prettystraightforward and works for what they are trying to accomplish. It'svery reminiscent of the film THEM where as the military are forced totake on giant ants, but here with spiders. It starts off a bit slowinitially, but quickly kicks into gear to let unleash the spiders onthe city with each getting bigger than the next. Wisely they seemed tohave spent a good amount of the films budget on the Spiders themselveswhich makes this film work even better. The spiders look pretty cool,with only a couple times that they feel CGI. There are some greatclassic giant monster shots, including an ariel shot of the giantspider running through the city complete with tanks and spotlights thatis really cool.

Make no mistake this is a silly monster movie and doesn't try to beanything else. It works because they take it serious in an attempt tocreate a fun monster movie and succeeded. There are not major starshere and the acting is average, but if you love monster films, thengive Spiders a shot when it hits DVD and VOD in March.

Now, I didn't see this in magnificent 3D and if I had I would bethrowing up in the toilets about now. It's not that the film is reallybad but it does suck ass in the special effects department and I knowit's low budget but does it have to be low expectation too? PatrickMuldoon from 'Starship Troopers' is the tough hero, Christa Campbellfrom 'Day of the Dead' and William Hope from 'Aliens' no less (rememberthe asshole Lt. Gorman?) have been thrown at this monster flick, andlets not forget 3D, in an attempt to make this Streamingable (and makemoney) but it has failed. You know, they could have tried some of theother tricks that is also a must have in a movie these days like somegirl/girl sex or men jerking off (hey, if PT Anderson can do it...) andit makes me long for the good old days when we simply had to kill theblack guy off at the start and with a hot chick hanging off the arm ofa lantern jawed (preferably in the closet) hero while with a cheekysmile he kicked ass, but alas, it's complicated times when people wantsilly things like a story, emotion, realistic spiders. Oh well.

The acting is not three bad and our main starlets all do the deed butlets face it, this gig is all about paying bills. The graphics are notup to scratch I'm afraid. The 3D has been tacked on for whatever reasonbut when you have a movie this dodgy, what the hell is gettingenhanced?

As far as monster movies go this is not the worst but under nocircumstance should hard earned cash be thrown away on 3D specs 'causeit ain't worth it dudes, stick to streaming or something because it'snot worth the extra.

By the time the credits roll you've just had quite enough of theinfestation. Spiders (avoid the 3D if you can) starts off on a passépremise and one or two scenes that makes your skin crawl, but anyspider movie would do that.

The Actors are horrible. The mother (female MJ) has the worst timingand insincere line delivery ever witnessed on screen. She whines, ispathetic and really did drag down what would have been a 90min laugh toa drone.

Father, train technician and giant spider killer on the weekends.Totally believable.

The CGI should have won us over but it was so inconsistent my headhurt. The size of the Queen changed from a 3 storey gargantuan tobarely the size of a subway train dueling with our Hero. WTF?! Themilitary was so inept I'm surprised they knew which end of the barrelbullets exited.

And finally the end scene. A spider can take Rocket fire, mortar,bullet hail, Tank fire and Apache gunship missiles, but turns in traintrack kill? But the little spider that caused all this survived a fallfrom outer space!! My head hurts.
